A bit of advice if you’re renting a car or van from any of our depots east of the Pennines: head to Wetherby or Woodall South for your coffee and loo break.
There are some things the latest Transport Focus report into the state of our motorway services doesn’t address. Who actually uses slot machines in services, because they’re always empty when we pass them by? What do the bored looking people in the mobile phone accessories shops do all day? Why are 24 hr services invariably closed at night (except for the toilets)?
Happily, the report does have other insights for us. If you’re taking one of our rental cars or vans down south, for example, avoid Thurrock Services on the M25, which is (by some distance) the worst surveyed services in the country. If you’re on the M6 – possibly having rented a vehicle from our Bolton depot – you’ll be spoilt for choice with great performing services – take your pick from Corley South, Hilton Park South, Stafford South, Killington Lake and Tebay North and South, all of which are in the top 10. And that M6 toll may be worth paying to spend a little time at Norton Canes, officially the top motorway services in the UK.
Way out west
We just have one slight issue with the survey results: what happened to services east of the Pennines? Of the top ten, seven are on the M6 or M6 toll and one is in the south. Just two are on the M1 or A1(M) (Woodhall South and Wetherby respectively).
As many of our rental vans and cars plough the roads around Leeds, Lincoln and Scunthorpe, we’re conscious that our customers in Bolton and Rugby are, when it comes to motorway services, at something of an advantage.
So consider this a request for parity, and a plea to the services of the east to up their game. Our van and car rental drivers are relying on you.
