It’s the end of the year. So let’s take a look back at some of the stories that raised our eyebrows this year.
Elon Musk’s ‘bulletproof’ truck
Cybertruck was unveiled to the world looking like a piece of set dressing from Total Recall. This beast of an EV can travel 500 miles on a single charge but Elon was most eager to demonstrate the truck’s bulletproof glass with a live demo. Cue one man, a steel ball and two immediately shattered windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMWwImDX3ks
Taking your mum’s driving test
You fear your mum will fail her test so you do what any loving son would. You dress up in drag and take the test in her place. Sadly, neither Heitor Márcio Schiave’s drag performance nor his driving skills were up to scratch. His secret identity was easily spotted, and the driving instructor said he would have failed anyway: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/man-arrested-for-dressing-up-as-his-mother-to-take-her-driving-test/
Rats can drive!
If AI self-driving cars creep you out, perhaps you’d prefer something a little more Doctor Dolittle. Scientists in the US have taught rats to drive. And it appears to have a calming effect on them. We’re unlikely to be hiring them as chauffeurs in our rental cars for a while yet though: https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/24/rats-driving-cars/
Squirrels ruin a Kia
In other animal related news, see what happens when squirrels hide their nuts in the engine of your average Kia: https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/08/squirrels-nuts-car-engine-compartment/
Pokémon Goes too far
We’ve run numerous pieces over the years about the things you shouldn’t do behind the wheel of one of our hire cars or rental vans. We must confess, playing Pokémon Go on 8 mobile phones simultaneously wasn’t one we anticipated: https://www.autoblog.com/2019/08/16/driver-pokemon-go-eight-phones/
Clarkson hates the BMW X5
Pity the X5, revealed as Jeremy Clarkson’s worst car of the year. In a lengthy list of misdemeanours including overenthusiastic lane assist, unexciting acceleration and expensive add-ons, Clarkson does at least have nice things to say about the gear stick. Lots of other reviewers loves the car, by the way: https://bit.ly/2VFamdg (Registration required)
