We’re planning now for a time when you’ll need an ultra-low emission hire van to enter most UK towns and cities.
In April 2019, central London becomes an ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ). It is, of course, already a low emission zone, but the addition of that word ‘ultra’ will mean even tighter limits on the vehicles that can drive on London’s streets without facing an additional charge. Some estimates suggest 80% of the vans currently on the road would not meet the new higher standards.
It’s the following two criteria that will affect van and car rental companies (and the people who hire from them):
- Petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles will have to meet Euro 4 standards
- Diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles will have to meet Euro 6 standards
The imminent changes were the only topic of discussion at a recent meeting between Transport for London and British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA). As reported by The Verdict, the changes are forcing vehicle rental companies to invest heavily in cleaner vehicles.
Why, you might ask, are we featuring a story about an ULEZ in London, when our vehicle hire depots are in Bolton, Leeds, Lincoln, Rugby and Scunthorpe? Well, partly it’s because some of the people who hire our cars and vans do so with the intention of driving into London, and if they want to avoid a charge of between £12.50 and £100 (in addition to the congestion charge) they’ll need a low emission vehicle.
But far more importantly, the ULEZ concept won’t stay confined to London. Plans are being put in place to enable local authorities across the UK to establish their own clean air zones, and that means we are likely to see many more ULEZs introduced in major town and cities.
That’s why we keep investing in new vehicles, and it’s why, over the past couple of years, we’ve been trialling new technologies. Without question we’ll be doing much more of that over the next few years, so that when you hire a van or car with TJS, you can take it anywhere without paying additional emission charges.
