A Halloween tale of spooky goings on in the world of driving statistics…
We don’t do many surveys of our car and van rental customers. It’s rare we ask what you get up to in your rental van, how far you plan to travel or how often you hire a vehicle. But if we did, we imagine there’d be a spread of results because the people who hire from us do so for all sorts of reasons.
You could probably say the same about every walk of life. Apart from, it seems, the people who take part in motoring surveys. Because when it comes to motoring surveys, something creepy is going on. Whatever the question, it seems the answer is always the same: 7 out of 10 motorists believe that…
Don’t believe us? Here’s a recent sample:
- 7 out of 10 motorists don’t want whiplash reforms
- 7 out of 10 Irish motorists want drink drivers named on a live register
- 7 out of 10 motorists uninsured on test drives
- 7 out of 10 motorists witness speeding on a regular basis
- 7 out of 10 motorists support changes to mobile driving laws
- 7 out of 10 motorists believe diesel exhaust fumes damage health
That’s a lot of sevens. But is it really so strange? Surely if you were to look a little deeper, you’ll find plenty of examples of stats that don’t end up at 7 out of 10.
But not so. In an entirely unscientific piece of research, we’d invite you to type ‘7 out of 10 motorists’ into Google and see what’s returned. If your results are the same as ours, you’ll have a full page of reports and surveys to look at. Now do the same for ‘6 out of 10 motorists’. We couldn’t find a single result.
We make no comment on that. But like an episode of The Twilight Zone (or Black Mirror if you’re under 40), it just seems a little odd that in lots of independent surveys, the same results keep cropping up again and again. Spooky.
Want to rent a car or van? 7 out of 10 motorists find a better deal with TJS. Actually, we made that up. It’s nearer 9. Find our best deals now.
